About MikesPickz.com
Mission
The underlying theme behind MikesPickz is a one- stop website for all your needs. It was thought of after I found myself checking numerous websites to get all the information I was looking for. I began to think that having it all in one place would be a good idea, and that has been my goal since. I am open to suggestions of adding more content to MikesPickz, as it is my goal to have all the information YOU want in one place.
History
MikesPickz was orignally founded in August 2005 as a one page website and the name MikesPickz.com was purchased in September, to make it easier for visiters to find the website. The primary focus of this website was NFL Football picks, which is what inspired the name. As the NFL season began to come to a close, MikesPickz began to expand by introducing an entertainment section which included video games, tv and movies. In the beginning of 2006, the entertainment section changed into a Music and Movie section.
It was in August of 2006, that MikesPickz made its first major change. MikesPickz switched its hosting provider and the one page layout was abandoned in favor of a 5- page layout. This change allowed for a cleaner, more easily navigated website. As the pages grew, so did the content. The Movies/Music page, Leaderboard page, and NFL picks were separated into their own page and the Archive page was added. Over the next several monthes the stock and weather section were added to the Archive page.
In 2007, MikesPickz expanded to adding the mobile website (mikespickz.info), and the layout was resigned to have a more elegant look to it. The NFL content section was changed in the off-season to the March Madness page and then that was changed back for the NFL season.
In 2008, the first podcast was introduced after the Superbowl. In that year, the MLB weekly review page was introduced to bridge the NCAA to NFL gap. It was in 2008, that I began to envision a new look for MikesPickz. In the 4th quarter of 2008, construction of the new and improved MikesPickz web site was begun.
In March of 2009, the new website was introduced to the public. The new features that were added at this update were an unlimited number of pages which means the content will no longer be rotated. The NFL, NCAA, NBA, and MLB will always be around and Archive was spun into it's own page. The new MikesPickz logo was introduced, the new logo gives a more professional feeling to the website. In addition to the new logo, the layout of the site was completely redesigned from scratch, not using a template as the previous versions did. The MikesPickz store was also introduced as part of the update and a new and improved (and more user friendly) Forum was also released.
In an effort to stay current with new technology, MikesPickz created its own Twitter page on June 18th, 2009 and a Sports blog on June 30th, 2009. Follow me on Twitter, twitter.com/MikesPickz, for continuous news from the world of Sports, Movies & Music.
One of the main goals of MikesPickz is to continually become a better website that my visitors want to come back and visit again. During September, 2009, I made numerous major changes to MikesPickz:
- The website was completely reformatted from strictly (X)HTML to a PHP based website. This change will allow more dynamic web pages to be added in the future.
- The navigation was completely re-done, after rigorous testing it was decided that the old navigation wasn’t highlighting the pages that my visitors most wanted to see. The new navigation hopes to allow for easier navigation of MikesPickz.
- The home page was re-styled from a two column layout to a three column layout. This was done to reduce scroll time and to move more of the important information to the top of the page.
- A Contact Form was added to allow visitors to ask questions and to comment on the website more easily.
- The MLB Weekly Review page and the Leader Board page was combined with the MikesPickz Sports Section Blog. These pages were combined because I felt it made more logical sense to keep all of the sports information pages together in one place.
At MikesPickz, your opinions matter, to make a request to improve my site or to leave feedback about the site.
